So...these days there is always a group speaking up to defend the rights and moral obligations of their particular interest groups. Lo and behold...(I like saying that) it seems the pigs have a group now....yup...in deference to the feelings of pigs and hogs the world over, the World Health Organization, known as the The World Health Organization also known as The WHO.....(wasn't that a rock band from the 70's?) are coming out in favor of the pigs and telling us not to call the Swine Flu the Swine Flu, instead they figure they have a new catchy name that doesn't offend any farm animals...they want us to call it "influenza A" or if we want to be really technical and politically correct, "H1N1."
Uh-huh...people are sick all over the world...infact some are even dying and the WHO are spending their time thinking of a new name for the cause.....
As of the 30th April 2009, 11 countries have officially reported 257cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection, there might be more, because some countries are probably still confused over what name to call it.
According to...um...who is it again...oh yeah...the WHO is who it is...the stats are not pretty:
United States 109 reported cases including one death
Mexico 97 reported cases including seven deaths
Austria 1 case
Canada 19
Germany 3
Israel 2
The Netherlands 1
New Zealand 3
Spain 13
Switzerland 1
United Kingdom 8
The WHO have raised the pandemic alert level to Phase 5 which means we are one phase from a full blown front on pandemic.
But back to the pigs....the WHO is reassuring us that eating well cooked pork poses no risk of infection. All you have to do is cook your pork well and wash your hands often with soap and water. See a doctor if you develop any symptoms.
Here on Silverhorn Mountain we are in the 'so far so good phase' which means we haven't had a case yet, which might be because we don't get many visitors and we seldom go anywhere....
Marcello, Chief Garden Gnome and head news reporter here at The View From Silverhorn Mountain has been out interviewing pigs, most of whom have declined any comment, choosing instead to just stick their heads in the swill and avoid the issue altogether.
